Building a Town

Activity Information

This topic explores aspects of the 3-D thinking involved in developing architectural ideas and making models.

Mathematical Connections

Designing nets requires thinking about and interpreting geometric information presented in different froms, moving from one form of representation to another.

The activity requires the construction of nets and provide an opportunity to work with Pythagoras' theorem when including roofs in the net design. Extending the activity to include the construction of models with more complicated roof structures could provide opportunities to work with the formula for circle circumference.

cre8ate maths has had a very positive effect on the mathematics department. It fits in with the functional skills agenda and is embedded into the scheme of work allowing staff to teach 'outside the box'. It has provided excellent ideas we might not otherwise have thought of.
